A Monday in April 2020
You’ll soon find out that I am not an early riser. Far from it. My Dad started working at 8.45 and I briefly woke up to hear his (now familiar) morning check in call with his team. But I fell immediately back to sleep… I woke up – and actually got up – at about 11am
Breakfast, shower, make-up etc. followed. The day actually started at about noon! No need to call me out, I’m ashamed about this already!
I usually start by checking my emails. We have a VLE at my university, and any notifications / assignments / discussions that happen are emailed to you.
This morning I had a job offer to help at a university open day (yay!!); some information about an upcoming exams (not yay!); links to pre-recorded lectures (we still have a few weeks of lectures before exams/end of term; and an opportunity to be a student buddy next year.
Once I finished admin, I stuck on some music (today a musical about a certain American founding father, and some feel-good pop) and gave my room a tidy. I had an video interview later so I needed to “professionalize” my room.
Then I got down to work. One of my favourite modules this year is number theory. The module starts by looking at division and congruences, and ends with quadratic reciprocity and the sum of 2 squared problem.
I spent a few hours revising the first few sections of notes, and then working my way through examples and exercises. Personally I find number theory quite intuitive and I love working through proofs, but I am trying to work on crafting more elegant proofs – mine tend to be a little “brute force”
After this I had lunch (toasties cooked by my Mum – positive to living back at home for now!) and then prepared for my interview.
I have applied for a role as a student representative for my department. I have been doing a similar role the whole time I have been at uni and I love it! I get to attend department meetings and have a say in whether new policies/ideas will benefit students. Next year I am hoping for a role that is 1 step higher up!!
To be honest, the interview was a bit of a disaster. I couldn’t make the technology work (grr hangouts and multiple google accounts apparently don’t agree!) and I struggle with interviews! I was very nervous and bungled a few questions!
Anyway!! After that I went and called my brother with my parents. He has moved out but needed some of the stuff he left behind. I didn’t really do anything else today! I baked cookies and spent some time with my Dad outside. And then finished the day off with Netflix (obviously!!)
Today wasn’t exactly a typical day for me! I usually aim to be a bit more productive, and actually get some work done! Tomorrow I have a department meeting to attend – trying to clear up a few queries about the new online exams – and then I have a project due soon so I am going to finish the final bits of that.
